Formula: Revised Harris-Benedict equation
Worth Knowing
The revised Harris-Benedict equation estimates basal energy expenditure — the calories your body burns at complete rest — and predates the now-more-common Mifflin-St Jeor formula. It tends to run slightly higher, especially for people with more body fat, because it was derived from a leaner early-20th-century population. If you're comparing results with a BMR tool that uses Mifflin-St Jeor, a modest difference between the two is expected rather than an error in either.
