A cylinder is effectively a circle extruded along its height, so its volume is just the circular base area times the height. The surface area is more interesting: it combines the two circular ends with the curved side, which unrolls into a flat rectangle whose width equals the circle's circumference. That unrolling trick is how you'd calculate the label wrapping a can. Cylinders are everywhere in engineering because they resist internal pressure evenly — hence pipes and tanks.
