The leap-year rule is more intricate than 'every four years': a year is a leap year if divisible by 4, except centuries, which must also be divisible by 400 — so 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not. This correction exists because Earth's orbit takes about 365.2425 days, and the simple four-year rule slightly overcounts. Without the century exception, the calendar would drift by roughly three days every four hundred years relative to the seasons.
