Converting raw marks to a percentage puts scores on a common scale so a 42/60 and a 68/100 can be compared directly — the first is 70%, the second 68%. That comparability is why percentages dominate report cards and transcripts. Be aware that a percentage says nothing about difficulty or class distribution: an 80% on a brutal exam can represent stronger work than a 95% on an easy one, which is what grading curves and percentiles try to capture.
