Roman Numeral Converter
Convert a number (1–3999) to Roman numerals.
Worth Knowing
Roman numerals combine seven letters using an additive-and-subtractive scheme, where a smaller symbol before a larger one subtracts (IV is 4, not 6). The system has no zero and no place value, which makes arithmetic awkward and is a large part of why positional decimal numerals eventually replaced it. This tool covers 1 to 3999 because standard Roman notation can't cleanly express 4000 or more without bars or other extensions.
