Flow Rate
Worth Knowing
Flow rate measures volume moving per unit time, so it inherits the same gallon ambiguity as volume — US versus imperial gallons differ by about 20%, which matters when comparing pump or appliance specs across regions. It appears everywhere fluids move: taps, pumps, rivers, and fuel injectors. A helpful relationship is that flow rate equals the pipe's cross-sectional area times the fluid's speed, which is why the same flow forces water faster through a narrow nozzle than a wide pipe.
